Time to shine

Today Liam and Miki shared with us in Time to Shine

Liam talked to us about his great-grandfather who was in the Second World War.

Miki showed us her autograph hockey sticks, which had some black sticks hockey players autographs on them. They even put their numbers on to help her recognise them when next watches them play. She also showed us her MVP trophy for hockey the year.

Wahoo! Tyler is officially an AMAZING Public Speaker!

We are very proud of Tyler.  His Mum tells me that he was a bit nervous before getting up on stage for Rotary Speech final, but he took control of his nerves and his confidence grew, as he stood in front of the audience.  He delivered his speech with style and was rewarded with SECOND place for his efforts!!  AMAZING effort - from drafting and crafting his persuasive argument, to making it through our Isleworth competitions and onto the stage at the Rotary Speech Finals.
Great work, Tyler!

Time to Shine

Today Holly shared with us her Disney drawings from the school holidays.

She discussed how she found the link to help her draw them and the frustration she had when things were not drawing the way she wanted them to.

Kai pai to mahi Holly!!

Here is a photo sent in from Karen. She is on the trip of a life time. Where do you think she is?

Start snapping in the holidays, send us your selfies and we can share on our blog.

Ice, Ice Baby!

Team Wairere is having fun learning about ice at the moment.  Ms K has been doing some super-amazing experiments using dry ice.
Ms T, (Room 1's student teacher) has been teaching about what happens when other substances touch ice.  Today we are learning that salt reduces the temperature of ice.
We used this chemical reaction to make orange juice slushies!  Click on this LINK to see how.

Canterbury Bulls Visit Wairere

We were treated to a visit from Canterbury's League team, The Bulls, on Thursday.  Two players threw the ball around with the mascot, Devon the bull and the manager gave us some free tickets to their game on Sunday 13th.  Tainui plays league for Canterbury in his age group, so we invited him to come and meet the players too.  Hope lots of you can make it to their game.

Time to Shine in Week 6

Today we enjoyed talks from two young men, Cory and Justin.  Justin bought an absolutely beautiful, little 4 month old miniature schnauzer, (which just happens to be the type of dog that Mrs S wants to get for her family!), called Jess.  She is the type of dog that does not shed hair.  Next week Raywyn is going to take her to the dog hairdresser, for a trim.
Cory is a cub scout.  He made a cool derby car at cubs, which he raced at high speed. He got into the finals and won a bronze award.  He also got a really cool patch to sew on his uniform.  Great driving, Cory!

Congratulations Paige

Well done to Paige and her Belfast netball team who won two games on Saturday. Next week they play in the finals. Kia waimarie! Good luck.

This is Billy's muscle car collection. He has been collecting them for about five years. Some have come from overseas. One of the collection is a replica of his dad's car a 1964 SS Chevelle. Billy is a car enthusiast and his favourite is the Dragster.

Time to Shine

Cordy brought in her new phone. It was given to her by her dad, because he has a new phone. It is a Sony phone and has four games on it. Cordy will use it for getting in touch with dad, watching youtube clips and playing games

Time to Shine

Jordan brought his soft toy in to share today. It is named Lucky after Jordan's real dog that died. Lucky is soft and cuddly and sleeps with Jordan.

Time to Shine

Sara has had this guitar and has been learning to play it for 2 years. She brought it in to show us today because it is very special to her.

Time to Shine

Mandy and Peanut came to school with Kathy today for her Time to Shine. Mandy is just one month old and Peanut is three months old. Peanut has twelve sisters and he looks just like his dad, Dodge. While Mandy gets into mischief sometimes, Peanut is the best behaved rabbit. Kathy chose to keep rabbits as she thinks they are cute, easy to look after and not very expensive.

Time to Shine

Here you can see Shelby with her mum and their 7 year old Siberian Husky named Ryda. Shelby has had Ryda for 3 years. He is an outside dog. Ryda has a couch in the garage for his bed. Ryda is currently moulting. He moults twice a year. He loves people, especially children. Ryda is really friendly and he loves to be tickled. He makes a terrible guard dog though!

Music is In the Air!

We have been learning another language!  The language of music.  We are learning to read notes on a stave and to recognise the beat value of notes and rests.  I just love it when our tamariki are motivated to learn more, ubiquitously.  Just look what Liam achieved last night, after our lesson on writing music!  Katahi na te tamaiti mohio, ko koe, Liam! (What a clever child you are, Liam!)
There are been some amazing instruments created by students and their families.  Here is Ryan with the drum set he made and decorated and Tejesh with his homemade electric guitar.  On the table beside Ryan, you can see just some of the other instruments children have made.  Tumeke

As well, we are applying our knowledge to learn to play the ukulele. Some of us have been practicing to play in assembly one day soon.

Room 1's Newest Member is a Bit Dehydrated!

Meet "Desiccated Sandshark Head", recently adopted by Anna, and removed from his harsh environment to be welcomed into our nice warm classroom.  Here, he met a new friend, "Sword" from a real swordfish!  Room 1 tamariki are enjoying a briny flavour in the air.  Ahhhh!  Nature!

Life Education Comes to Isleworth

Harold and Sarah turned up at Isleworth today, to teach our tamariki all about being healthy.
Room 1, pictured here, learned about being happy and healthy.  We know about the importance of eating breakfast, getting enough sleep and drinking plenty of water.  We also learned about some of our body's organs and where they hang out inside our bodies.
We all managed to squeeze into the mobile classroom.  The children were very engaged in their learning.  Just look at all those hands up!

This is a very poor photo of a clever interactive display of our insides.  This shows how our hearts are surrounded by our lungs.
Even though we are old, we still wanted to say hi to Harold!

Our Year 6 Tamariki Visit Breens

We had a brisk walk to Breens today, where Principal, Brian Price welcomed us.  Then we split into groups and experienced the Technology classes.
 Making snow in science.
We had to stir the chemicals and they turned into fluffy snow!
Decorating pens in Fabric and Fibre.
Here are our photo frames that we made in Hard Materials.
 Printmaking in Art.
Biscuit shaping and decorating in Food Tech.
We really enjoyed our experience at Breens today and appreciate the opportunity for our children to visit and to feel a bit more confident about going to a new school next year.
