Time to Shine

In week 10 we met Melissa's cat Lucien. The x-ray shows her broken leg after been hit by a car. Piper proudly shared her porcelain doll Imogen. Imogen was a special gift from Piper's nana. Anna managed to bring in her rather large easy rider board. She has been surfing since she was 7. She also shared with us one of the medals she won in the South Island surf live saving championships.

Show.... Don't Tell!

Today, Wairere writers learned to respect their readers by not telling the reader all the details.  It is important to sometimes show, not tell all the details.  I wonder if you can use the clues to figure out what emotion is being described.

"I gulped.  I shook in the darkness and my teeth began to chatter.  All of a sudden..... BANG!"  by Alexus

"A shiver ran down my spine. My body started stiffening.  I was taking my dog for a walk in the park.  Someone was watching me, I knew it!"  by Hannah

Spellathon Due on Friday

Just a friendly reminder that the Spellathon forms need to be back by Friday, ready for our test on Monday.  We will send the yellow forms home again on Monday, to let you know how much money to collect from your sponsors.  Thank you for your anticipated support of this school fundraiser.

Science in Action

Here are some budding scientists from Room 1, testing the flammability of natural and man-made fibres.  We had to put in place rigorous safety requirements as we set fire to fabric samples.  This workshop is part of Team Wairere's Fire Workshops.  Each teacher is providing some hands-on science learning based around our theme, fire.  Ask your child what they have been learning.

Week 9 Time to Shine Stars

Sarah has been practicing for a career in cruise ship towel folding!  Today, she shared with us the technique for making a resting pig from a couple of towels.  Cassidy and Jacob helped out and will be applying for a job with P&O soon!  LOL.

Rosie and her lab, Sapphy came and showed us some awesome tricks.  What a lot of love there was between these two!  They have a lovely relationship.  Sapphy was a very well-behaved student and spent most of her learning time relaxing under the desk!

Jayden is a quad bike racer!  We didn't know that about you, Jayden!  How cool are the photos of you riding your quad bike?!  Good luck for your next race.  Please let us know how you get on.

40 Hour Famine

WOW Hannah!!  You have raised $60 to put towards Isleworth's contribution to the 40 Hour Famine.  This year, World Vision is raising funds for Bangladesh.  Over 8 million children are malnourished there.  The money will go towards establishing emergency feeding programmes, teaching families how to grow vegetables and improving access to health and nutrition services.  Way to go, Hannah and our other brave 40hr Faminers!  You're making a difference in the world!  If you still have outstanding money to collect from your sponsors, please do so this weekend and hand it to Ms K on Monday.

Numeracy Learning

There has been quite a lot of talk in the media lately about NZ children and their progress in Numeracy.  In Team Wairere, we know that if we teach other people, they learn, and we learn too.  When we teach others, our understanding is consolidated.
Here, Ashton is busy sharing her knowledge with her group of how to solve times tables problems by using her knowledge of x5 facts.

Time To Shine in Week 8

Today we were entertained by two well-organised young men, Premier and Tayler.  Premier had brought along his favourite toy, which he has used one million times! since his eleventh birthday, called Simon Swipe.  It is harder than you think to remember and play all the musical patterns!  Thanks for showing us.

Tayler had collated some great photos of his favourite things and presented them on a slide show.  We enjoyed listening to his stories and looking at his photos.  Great effort, Taylor!

Cassidy's Game - Knowledge Hunter!

Cassidy and her family have come up with a brilliant idea for a board game, which has kept a group of Room 1 learners busy for ages.  Each player has to navigate their way around the classrooms, answering questions from different subject areas along the way.  It has lots of components and is very professionally presented.  Thanks Cassidy for sharing your fantastic game with Room 1.

CSO Concert

Today the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra played a free concert at Charles Luney Auditorium.  They introduced the instruments of the orchestra to the children and then they invited the kids to vote for their favourite melody and style of music.  We ended up composing a piece of music entitled Lounge Tango.

Time to Shine Stars of Week 7

Cassidy told us a story about finding her cat, as a kitten in her garden.  She and her family ended up keeping Pixie.  Cassidy loves him!
Connor and his family love the Muppets.  Gonzo is his favourite soft toy and has been in Connor's life for about three years.  Connor said he wouldn't want a nose like Gonzo's, but we can't understand why not!!
Ashton combined all three of her loves into an iMovie, featuring Minecraft, making iMovies and baking.
We felt so lucky, because Ashton actually baked some mini-muffins and brought them to school for us to taste!  Thanks Ashton!

Cross Country Reps for Zones

Here's a photo of our Cross Country reps.  It's a bit late, sorry, but regardless, we are all very proud of our fit and healthy crew.
